First Yard-Long Beans

Gita Beans

It’s time for beans! Yesterday I noticed the first beans on this trellis, and I went out and picked them this morning. This type of bean is called a yard long bean, but it has a lot of other names, including the Chinese long bean. They’re a “pole bean,” meaning they need a trellis to grow (as opposed to the free-standing “bush bean.”) You can cook these beans (which are not in fact, a yard long– more like a foot) just like regular green beans, they’re just a little longer and skinnier. This variety is ‘Gita,’ and they grew very well for me last year, so I’m hoping this is another good year.
