Squash Oddity

I put in four summer squash plants in the garden this year: two yellow squash and two zucchini. Two of my plants look like the top photo (healthy), and two look like the bottom photo (eaten to death). I’m almost certain that the healthy plants are the yellow squash and the two that are almost dead are the zucchini– although I didn’t label them and I’m not absolutely sure my memory is correct. But essentially the same thing happened last year– the yellow squash plants were fine and the zucchini plants were destroyed by pests. What gives? It can’t be the location, they’re all mixed in together! I’m also not certain what pest this is. I checked for squash bug eggs but didn’t find any. Cucumber beetles maybe? If you have any ideas or suggestions, I’m all ears. Please post them in the comments section.
